What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

Published on · Max Optimice Team · Last updated:

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of optimizing your content so generative AI engines —ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews— cite it in their answers. Unlike SEO, which aims for a position in the list of links, GEO aims for your brand to appear inside the answer the AI gives the user.

Which factors increase AI citations?

A Princeton University study measured the impact of different tactics on visibility in generative engines:

  • Citing authoritative external sources: up to +40% visibility (and up to +115% for lower-ranked content).
  • Adding statistics and hard numbers: between +30% and +41%.
  • Including expert quotations: around +28%.
  • Keyword stuffing: 0% improvement, and even a penalty on Perplexity.

Where should the most important information go?

At the beginning. According to Semrush data, 44% of AI citations come from the first 30% of the page. That is why you should answer the main question in the first sentences —the “answer-first” pattern— and leave context and examples for later.

Does content freshness matter?

Yes. Content cited by AI engines is on average 25.7% fresher than traditional search results, and pages updated within the last two months receive up to 28% more citations. Keep visible update dates and review your content regularly.

In short: evidence-rich content (statistics, quotes and sources), structured with the answer up front and kept fresh, is what works best for GEO today.
